As a Garden Club members, we strive to make our communities more beautiful….
but what is desperately needed is an awareness of the whole landscape and of all the elements of which it is made. How every person uses the land determines total environment of all of us.
During the early fifties the Country Women’s’ Association held its Annual Conference in Sydney. The guest speaker was Mrs Margaret Davis, President of the Garden Club of Australia (Sydney based) Attending the meeting was Mrs Evelyn Sykes of Goulburn, well known in the district for her knowledge of horticulture and her gardening experiencing. She was the author of “Gardening in Goulburn and Thereabouts”, under the pseudonym “Dinner for Eight”, first published in 1944 and reprinted in its 6th edition in 1980. Mrs Davis addressed the meeting and spoke of the Garden club and the remembrance driveway. Mrs Skype chatted later to Mrs Davis and so impressed was she with the aims and objects of the club she immediately joined, attended several meetings and social functions. She persuaded several friends to join and the group got together in Goulburn and formed a small Garden Club.
